As part of Loyola Marymount University’s 2026 Brighten Your Summer series, more than 20 older adults gathered for An Afternoon of Wellness for Older Adults on July 15 at the Emerson Avenue Community Garden. The event offered movement, mindfulness, conversation, and community activities designed to support the well-being of local older adults.
Fred Puza, LMU’s director of Community Relations, welcomed attendees and emphasized the value of the event’s intergenerational focus.
“There’s something deeply meaningful about bringing older adults and college students together,” Puza said. “These intergenerational connections foster understanding, joy, and a shared sense of purpose. Everyone benefits when spaces are created where stories, energy, and wisdom can be exchanged.”
Tina Vanderjagt welcomed attendees to the Emerson Avenue Community Garden and shared how the space supports environmental education and community healing.
Diana Hoffman and Ashlei Lien of Airport Marina Counseling Services then led a calming meditation and guided relaxation session. Gentle breathing and mindfulness exercises set a tranquil tone for the afternoon.
Members of the LMU women’s basketball team led participants through a series of gentle stretches, followed by a lively question-and-answer session. The student-athletes discussed the team’s season, healthy habits, and daily wellness practices.
The afternoon concluded with food and refreshments in the garden, where attendees mingled, shared stories, and toured the grounds.
An Afternoon of Wellness for Older Adults was among the free public programs offered through LMU’s 2026 Brighten Your Summer series, which included theater, sports, movies, classes, worship, and family-friendly activities.
